One of the best examples of the inter-connectedness of the three themes for this year’s Gobal Conference on Agricultural Research for Development (GCARD2) is the Global Foresight Hub, re-introduced on Wednesday by Joost Vervoort of the CGIAR Research Program on Climate Change, Agriculture and Food Security (CCAFS).

Vervoort’s take home message? You can have all the foresight you want, but if it’s not integrated across multiple scales and multiple stakeholders it won’t do anybody any good. In fact, the “Hub” exemplifies the inseparable nature of the Foresight and Partnership themes; their inter-dependence is the key to the practical application of foresight in agricultural research and development.

How can countries coming out of war rebuild livelihoods?

Post-conflict and protracted crisis countries with civil conflicts or serious natural disasters such major earthquakes and massive floods will absolutely have to deal with massive relocation of populations.

Here enters the role of international agricultural research and development organizations in rebuilding livelihoods in these countries. International organizations including the Centers supported by the CGIAR have an important role to play in contributing to rebuilding agricultural research and development in post-conflict countries.

To adapt communities and local agriculture to the impacts of climate change, organizations can’t maintain an individualistic outlook, said Jesse Naab of CSIR-Ghana in a session on Partnerships for Environmental Resilience and Climate Change, day 2 of the Global Conference on Agricultural Research for Development (GCARD2). Instead, they must strive to collaborate and be on the lookout for ways to build capacity-enabling networks.

But tell us, Dr. Naab, how does that actually work?

Es un tema ético. Mientras muchos se oponen a la utilización de agroquímicos, hay mil millones de personas en el mundo que comen cada tres días, y 850 millones que ni siquiera comen cada estos días, aseguró el Director general del Centro Internacional de Agricultural Tropical (CIAT) Ruben Echeverría.

El Ministro de Agricultura y Pesca Tabare Aguerre, junto a importantes personalidades del GCARD2, dieron una conferencia de prensa en el Hotel Conrad. El tema más tratado a lo largo de la conferencia fue la utilización de transgénicos en la agricultura. Uno de los integrantes de la audiencia, oriundo de Paraguay, fue quien dio el punta pié inicial poniendo sobre la mesa este tema.
